I am now based in Dubai as an employee of Dubai Government's Department of Public Health and Safety under the Occupational Safety section. I started working last August 1, 2010 as a Safety Specialist and i was fortunate to have an orientation and appreciation training and a chance to visit their different departments.
With the short two weeks orientation program, i also had the chance to evaluate and appreciate their existing programs as far as Occupational Safety and Health is concerned. There are few departments who are already IMS certified, meaning they are already certified with the following standards: Quality Systems (ISO 9001), Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) and Safety Management System (OHSAS 18001). While the other departments have yet to start their own Safety Management Program and/or Safety Management System (SMS) and safety procedures.
It is also part of my job to evaluate their existing safety Technical Guidelines and the government's Safety Manual. Quite tough and challenging job ahead.

The THREE Safety Organizations in Cagayan de Oro City
As of date, there are three safety organizations here in Cagayan de Oro City namely:
1. Occupational Safety and Health Network (OSH Network 10)led by Engr. TV Cahoy
2. Safety Organization of the Philippines Inc. - Misamis Oriental, Cagayan de Oro City and Bukidnon led by Engr. MB Sumalinog; and the
3. Association of Safety Practitioners of the Philippines Inc. (ASPPI)led by Engr. HR Cual
What is good about these three organizations is that they are not competing with each other. In fact, there was a recently signed MOA among these safety groups and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) committing to work towards a Zero Accident Workplace and a Safer Northern Mindanao.
We have lined up different activities that support each other because these safety groups believed that the mission is one and the same i.e. to make our workplace a SAFER and BETTER.

A New Year Message to Safety Enthusiasts
Happy New Year to all followers of this blog. Huh, it's been a year since my last update.
Anyway, as a new year message - this year, and as always will be another challenge to all of us in trying to make our workplace a better and safer one.
Technologies are fast becoming obsolete and the term "New" is frequently associated with "better" in the workplace. But when new equipment, substances, or procedures are introduced, your employees might also be exposed to new hazards.
To protect your workers in a changing work environment, you need to remember the heirarchy i.e.
1. Engineering Control
2. Administrative Control
3. Personal Protective Equipment
Lastly, bear in mind that there's always a better and safer way of doing things.
